I was jealous of the Samantha doll my young cousin got for her birthday. Then I started reading the books. Couldn't afford the doll until last year.

Dolls first. I had never really been into dolls as a child...never really started getting "into" them until I was 22...but I can clearly remember the first time I saw an American Girl doll...

Picture it, Michigan, 1990. A non-doll loving girl goes to a birthday party at a friend's house and "meets" Samantha and Kirsten. I showed interest andc the girl's mother gave my Mom a card to send for a catalouge. The next day I was at the library checking out the books! I read all three series before deciding on Molly, who came in May of 1991.

When I knew that we were going to meet a friend at AGPNY, I had dd read Meet Molly, who I thought she might like because she had glasses. We also read Meet Kit and when she saw her, she fell in love with Kit.

Since then, we're still working our way through the series. She likes the dolls, but I think that the books are what really peak her interest in them.

I think that they are wonderful stories and characters as well, and love the child's viewpoint and seeing history in action.

Books first. At the time, the dolls were expensive and I knew I had to wait until Christmas to ask for one.

However, when borrowed from a library, books are free.

Well when I first got the catalog I didn't really look through it, so the books basically came first when I was in 5th grade.

I think it was books. I read the books, saw the free catalog thing in the back, and got the catalog. I fell in love with them- I thik I liked Kirsten the most though!

I was such a bookworm when I was little (and still am) and I fell in love with the books first.

Doll, somewhat, since I fell for Addy first. But I ended up getting books before I got any dolls.
